Women's Hockey Wins 4-0 Over Minnesota State

The Golden Gophers opened the first period in similar fashion to the previous contest scoring a power-play goal in the first 20 minutes. La Toya Clarke fired a shot that came off a blocked shot and top- shelved the puck past MSU goalie Shari Vogt at 18:41 of the first period. Krissy Wendell and Lyndsay Wall set up Clarke's goal. It was her ninth goal of the season, third power-play goal of year. The Gophers capitalized on their lone power-play shot of the period.
The Gophers tacked on two goals in the second period to give Minnesota a 3-0 lead. Noelle Sutton tipped in a goal at 9:32 with Melissa Coulombe and Wall on the assists. The Gophers were four-on- four when the goal was scored. The Maroon and Gold added an additional four-on-four goal when Wendell added her ninth goal of the season at 10:44. Danielle Ashley fired a shot into the boards with Wendell picking up the puck at the blueline and skated in for the goal.
The Mavericks were called with a five-minute major at the end of the second period for kneeing. The Gophers scored on the opportunity at 2:48 of the third period. Becky Wacker tipped in an Allie Sanchez slap shot for the goal. Coulombe started the power play adding the second assist.
Brenda Reinen was between the pipes for Minnesota stopping all 16 Maverick shots on goal. It was her third shutout of her career, second against MSU. Vogt had 37 saves recording a 7-4-1 record.
For the first time in 24 games, Natalie Darwitz went scoreless. She had a 15-game scoring streak at the end of the 2002-03 season. In her 24 games, Darwitz scored 50 points.
The Gophers play in a nonconference match next weekend when they host North Dakota Saturday and Sunday. Both contests are scheduled for a 2:05 p.m.
