12/1/2003 12:00:00 AM | Athletics
Versus Michigan State, Briggs allowed just one goal while stopping 23 shots in a 5-1 win. Prior to the Spartan goal, he was riding a shutout streak of 93:16. Against Michigan, Briggs had a spectacular game in leading Minnesota to a 4-2 win over the fifth-ranked Wolverines. Briggs stopped 30 shots and did not allow a goal in the final 46:13 to allow Minnesota to come back from a 2-1 deficit. For the weekend, he had four shutout periods.
Briggs is 3-0-0 in his last three games and 5-4-1 overall on the season. Briggs has allowed only three goals in his last three games and has seen his goals-against average drop to 2.85 from 3.62 and his saves percentage rise from .871 to .895.
The award is the second for a Minnesota player this season - defenseman Keith Ballard earned Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 24 - and Briggs' first career WCHA honor.
The Golden Gophers stay on the road this weekend for a two-game WCHA series at Alaska Anchorage. Both games are set for 7:05 p.m., Central time - 10:05 p.m., Alaska time. Both games will be broadcast on KCCO AM 950, but will not be televised.
