Taking Care of Business
No. 9/8 Minnesota (7-0) had nearly two weeks off before playing host to Wisconsin-Green Bay on Sunday, Dec. 21 at 1 p.m. During this break in their season schedule, the Golden Gophers will be taking their final exams.
To Follow the Action
Minnesota women's basketball is broadcast live on WMNN Radio (1330 am), as well as the Minnesota Athletics webwite gophersports.com. Tom Witschen calls the action, while Lynnette Sjoquist provides the color commentary.
The Highest Rank Ever
Minnesota was ranked No. 7 in the Dec. 1 ESPN/USA Today Poll, the highest the Golden Gophers have ever been ranked in any poll. Previously, the highest was No. 9 in the Nov. 24 ESPN/USA Today Poll and in the Jan. 6, 2003 Associated Press Poll. The Gophers are currently No. 8 in the poll.
Gophers Remain No. 9 in AP Poll
The Golden Gophers are ranked No. 9 in the Associated Press Poll for the third consecutive week, matching the highest AP ranking in school history. Minnesota was also ranked No. 9 on Jan. 6, 2003, for one week.
National Ranking Streak Rolls On
Minnesota has been ranked in the AP National Poll's top 25 for the last 32 polls, dating back to Jan. 21, 2002, and is building upon the longest streak in Golden Gopher history.
Big Ten Has Three in AP's Top 10
The Big Ten has three teams - No. 6 Penn State, No. 8 Purdue and No. 9 Minnesota - ranked in the Associated Press national poll's top 10 for the second straight week. This is the first time since the preseason poll in 1993-94 that the Big Ten could boast three top-10 teams. With No. 18 Ohio State and No. 24 Michigan State, the Big Ten has five nationally ranked teams for the first time since Jan. 19, 1996. The Big Ten and the Big 12 share the honor of having the most teams ranked in this week's poll.
Rockin' & Rollin' With the RPI
Minnesota started the season ranking No. 17 in non-conference schedule RPI. Adding Colorado and Southern California into the mix and going a perfect 5-0 through Dec. 3, the Golden Gophers jumped to No. 6 in the WBCA/Summerville RPI rankings. Then, despite wins over Creighton (82-71) and UMKC (79-53), the Gophers fell to No. 12 in RPI.
Andersson To Miss UWGB Game
Senior Kadidja Andersson will miss the first game of her career next week, when the Golden Gophers' starting forward returns to her homeland Sweden due to the death of her grandmother. Andersson will rejoin the team after Christmas for the Virginia Tournament. She has played in all 96 games prior to missing the upcoming game versus Wisconsin-Green Bay on Dec. 21.
Williams Win Streak Tied at 14
With wins over Southern, Colorado and Creighton at home this season and a perfect 11-0 mark in Williams Arena a year ago, the Golden Gophers have now won 14 straight games in "The Barn" tying the longest winning streak in Williams Arena. The first 14-game winning streak was from Feb. 23, 1980 to March 14, 1981.
