Wrestlers in Second Place After Day One of Southern Scuffle

Minnesota advanced a tournament-high 10 wrestlers to tomorrow's semifinals matches, while Missouri has nine. The Tigers have four wrestlers still alive in the consolation bracket, while the Golden Gophers have one.
Juniors Keri Stanley and Josh McLay posted the biggest wins for Minnesota. Unranked at 149, Stanley upset third-seeded Jason Jones of Appalachian with a pin just 36 seconds into the match. He then earned a 5-0 decision over Antwone Floyd of Duke to advance to the semifinals. Seeded sixth at 174, McLay upset third-seeded Keith Clifton, 3-2, in the quarterfinals.
Also advancing for Minnesota were top seeds Bobbe Lowe at 125, Damion Hahn at 197 and Cole Konrad at heavyweight. Second seeds advancing for the Golden Gophers were Quincy Osborn at 133, Matt Nagel at 157 and Jacob Volkmann at 165. Volkmann improved to a team-best 18-2 on the season with three straight wins, including his seventh pin of the year in the second round.
Rounding out Minnesota's semifinal qualifiers were No. 3 Quincy Osborn at 133 and No. 4 Jon Duncombe at 174.
Following tomorrow's action, the Golden Gophers return to dual meet action on Thursday in Rochester, Minn. Minnesota will face No. 4 Nebraska and No. 10 Arizona State beginning at 2 p.m.
