Golden Gopher Wrestlers Take Seventh in Las Vegas

Redshirt freshman Cole Konrad led Minnesota with a third-place finish at heavyweight. After dropping his second round match, Konrad won five straight matches including a 3-2 decision over Cain Velasquez in the third-place match. He finished the tournament with a 6-1 record.
Three other Minnesota wrestlers also placed as Bobbe Lowe earned a 10-5 decision over Tony Franco of Cal Poly to claim seventh place in the tournament. Sophomore Tommy Owen went 5-2 en route to an eighth place finish at 141 pounds. Senior Jacob Volkmann took home fifth place with a 14-1 major decision over J.J. Holmes of Eastern Michigan. Volkmann finished with a 5-2 record and improved to 14-2 on the season.
Minnesota chances were hampered as defending NCAA Champion Damion Hahn battled through a rib injury. After winning his first two matches, Hahn was defeated by Matt Montiero of Cal-State Bakersfield, 6-1. Hahn had to forfeit his consolation match.
Minnesota returns to the mat to open their dual meet season next Friday at the Target Center vs. Iowa State. The match begins at 7 p.m.
