LetterThe University of Minnesota soccer team has announced the signing of two top recruits to join the Golden Gophers in the 2003 season. Haley Lentsch and Kjirsten Sigmund have each signed National Letters of Intent.

Lentsch, a native of Woodbury, Minn., joins the Maroon and Gold as a 2002 all-state forward from Stillwater Area High School. A clutch performer for the Ponies last season, Lentsch finished with 15 goals and five assists in her senior year. For her efforts, she was named to the USYSA All-Region II team.

"Haley is one of the most notable recruits in the state of Minnesota," Golden Gopher Head Coach Barbara Wickstrand said. "She'll most likely be playing forward for us. Haley is a natural talent who is strong both technically and tactically. She will definitely bring an added dimension into our forward lineup.

Sigmund comes to Gold Country from Nanaimo, British Columbia as a standout defender/central midfielder and a member of the U-17 Canadian National Pool. A captain of her Premier Women's League club, Sigmund was also a member of the 2002 U-17 Provincial All-Star Team and the 2001 U-16 Provincial All-Star Team in British Columbia.

"Kjirsten is a versatile central player who will probably play in the defensive middle for us," Wickstrand said. "She can win everything in the air and is strong as nails. Kjirsten will undoubtedly be a welcomed addition to the Golden Gopher roster in 2003."
