Men's Hockey Defeats Wisconsin 5-2 at Mariucci Arena

Frid The Golden Gopher Men's Hockey Team got goals from five different skaters as it defeated Wisconsin 5-2 on Friday night at Mariucci Arena. Minnesota (16-7-7, 11-5-5) has now won five straight games at home vs. the Badgers (10-18-3, 4-14-3). The two teams will meet again on Saturday night.

Freshmen led the way early on for Minnesota as rookie defenseman picked up the puck from Grant Potulny and beat UW goalie Bernd Bruckler top shelf at 5:08 of the first period. Freshman Tyler Hirsch then got on the board as he deflected Matt DeMarchi's centering pass into the net at 13:47.

The Golden Gophers took the 2-0 lead into the second period and Andy Sertich benefitted from another DeMarchi feed to notch his third goal of the season at 11:18.

Wisconsin pulled to within two when Jake Heisler's wrister from the circle beat UM goaltender Travis Weber five-hole at 15:58. Minnesota would respond though with time winding down in the period. On the power-play, junior Grant Potulny put home the one-timer from the right circle with 37 seconds to play.

The Badgers rallied again in the third with time winding down. Tom Gilbert notched his fifth goal of the season on the power-play at 14:39. DeMarchi would finish off the night though with a one-timer of his own at 18:29 to close out the scoring.

Minnesota outshot the Badgers 50-27 for the evening, but Bruckler made 45 saves for Wisconsin. Weber countered with 25 saves for the Golden Gophers.
