University of Arizona freshman pitcher Alicia Hollowell threw a no- hitter and the Wildcat hitters belted two home runs to hand the University of Minnesota softball team a 6-0 loss, its first defeat of the season, at the Pepsi Arizona Classic in Tucson, Ariz. Hollowell struck out 15 UM batters for her second no-hitter of the year and improved Arizona’s record to 12-1 on the season. The Golden Gophers (7-1) only got one runner on base, thanks to an error by UA first baseman Erin Polomarez in the third inning.
After Hollowell struck out the side in the top of the first inning, the Wildcats put two runners on with two singles to the left side of the Minnesota defense. Minnesota’s Piper Marten pitched herself out of the jam, posting a strikeout and forcing a fly to right field to end the threat. The Wildcats took the lead in the bottom of the third in a big way as Wendy Allen hit a grand slam to right field. Arizona loaded the bases with a double to left, a Stephanie Sward error and a walk. The homer was the first allowed by Minnesota pitching this season.
Arizona struck again with another round-tripper in the bottom of the fourth as Lovieanne Jung crushed her eighth home run of the season over the left field wall to make it 5-0. Sophomore Lyn Peyer relieved Marten in the bottom of the fifth and quieted the UA bats, going 1-2- 3 in the inning. The bats awoke again in the sixth, however, as Arizona loaded the bases with three infield singles. Jung came to bat and hit a long fly ball to center to knock in the runner at third with the sacrifice. Jung ended the game, going 2-for-2 with two RBI, two runs scored, a home run and a walk.
With her shutout, Hollowell improved to 6-1 while Marten took the loss to move to 3-1 on the season.
The Golden Gophers face Arkansas tonight in thr final game of day two of the Pepsi Classic and take on No. 6 Washington tomorrow at 1 p.m. Mountain time.
