Minnesota’s Season Ends with 4-2 Loss to Washington

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Minnesota saw its 2026 season come to a close on Wednesday afternoon as the Golden Gophers fell 4-2 to Washington in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament.
Sydney Schwartz (11-17) got the start in the circle for Minnesota (16-36) and was charged with the loss after allowing three runs across four innings of work. Natalie Susa added an inning of relief with two strikeouts, while Macy Richardson tossed the final frame.
At the plate, the Golden Gophers were led by Cassie Johnson, who went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and an RBI. Tara Wolocko also turned in a strong performance, finishing 1-for-1 with a double, two walks and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Minnesota struck first in the opening inning. After Maggie Werner reached base and moved into scoring position, Wolocko delivered a two-out RBI double to left center to give the Gophers an early 1-0 lead.
Washington answered with a run in the bottom of the second before the Gophers reclaimed the advantage in the third. Johnson launched a solo home run to right center with one out in the inning, putting Minnesota back in front 2-1.
The Huskies tied the game in the fourth on an RBI single from Kaycie Burdick before taking the lead for good in the fifth on Ava Carroll's RBI double. Washington added an insurance run in the sixth and held Minnesota scoreless over the final four innings to secure the 4-2 victory.

» Johnson hit her team-leading home run of the postseason with a solo shot in the third inning.
