The second-ranked University of Minnesota wrestling team (16-4, 6-1 Big Ten) won nine of 10 matches this afternoon in a 40-6 Big Ten dual meet win over Wisconsin (9-6, 1-6) in Madison, Wis. Minnesota won six of the matches with bonus points. Minnesota has defeated the Badgers seven straight times.

Derek Phillips, ranked 14th in the nation, started the meet well for the Golden Gophers at 141 pounds with a 11-3 major decision of Tony Turner. Phillips had four takedowns in the bout. Second-ranked Jared Lawrence gave Minnesota a 10-0 lead at 149 pounds, pinning Ed Gutnik in 3:50. Lawrence had a 9-5 lead after posting four takedowns before rolling Gutnik to his back.

After second-ranked Luke Becker won by forfeit at 157 pounds, Jacob Volkmann scored a 5-1 decision over Kelly Flaherty at 165 pounds to give Minnesota a 19-0 lead. Volkmann led just 2-0 against the unranked Badger entering the third period but managed a takedown and added an extra point for advantage time to seal the win. Josh McLay kept the Gophers unbeaten with a 10-1 major decision of Brady Reinke at 174 pounds.

The Badgers got on the board at 184 pounds when ninth-ranked Ralph DeNisco pinned Casey Flaherty in 2:17. The Golden Gophers quickly regained any lost momentum at 197 pounds when Damion Hahn dominated Lee Kraemer. Hahn scored a 17-3 technical fall by taking Kraemer down four times and posting two three-point near falls in the bout.

Minnesota took a 31-6 lead when Jacob Lininger upset 18th-ranked Justin Staebler, 5-1 at heavyweight. Lininger led 3-0 after two periods and held on for the victory. The Gophers got a second-straight upset when No. 17 Bobbe Lowe edged No. 10 Tony Black 6-5 at 125 pounds. Lowe took a 2-0 lead with a takedown 1:14 into the match but Black scored a reversal and a two-point nearfall to gain control. Lowe responded with a reversal of his own and a two-point nearfall to lead 6-4 after the first period. Black escaped to begin the second period but that was the end of the scoring as Lowe hung on for the decision.

Top-ranked Ryan Lewis capped the dual with a pin of Tom Clum at 133 pounds. Lewis led 7-1 before dropping Clum at 4:10. Lewis leads the team with 10 pins on the year.

Minnesota faces Indiana on February 23 at the Sports Pavilion to conclude the dual meet season. The meet starts at 12:30 p.m.
