Minnesota Baseball Falls to Arizona 7-2 in Series Finale

strandThe Minnesota baseball team (1-2) lost 7-2 to Arizona (8-4) at Frank Sancet Field on Sunday, February 23. With the win the Wildcats took two of three games for the Golden Gophers.

Minnesota stranded 11 runners in the first five innings and were held scoreless after scoring a run in the third inning. Freshman lefthander Glen Perkins (Stillwater, Minn.) pitched five innings, gave up three runs and struck out three in his first college start, but took the loss. Richie Gardner pitched five innings, gave up one run and picked up the win to move to 3-0 on the season.

Arizona jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when Pat Reilly delivered a two-out RBI single. Minnesota answered in the top of the third when Luke Appert (Cottage Grove, Minn.) doubled to left field to bring home Ben Pattee (Ukiah, Calif.) and tie the score at 1-1.

The Wildcats took the lead back in the bottom of the third inning on a Moises Duran RBI single to make the score 2-1. Arizona extended its lead to 3-1 in bottom of the fourth inning when Richard Mercado singled and scored on a wild pitch and a throwing error.

Arizona scored again in the bottom of the sixth inning to go up 4-1 when Brian Anderson led off with a triple and came around to score on a wild pitch. The Wildcats made a bid to add to their score when Pat Reilly hit a deep drive to centerfield, but Sam Steidl (Alexandria, Minn.) reached over the wall to rob him of a home run. Arizona tacked on a run in the bottom of the seventh and two in the eighth to go up 7-1.

The Golden Gophers added on one run in the ninth when Appert singled home Steidl to make it 7-2.

Minnesota was led by Pattee who was three for four with a run today. Appert was also two for five with a double and two RBI.

Arizona was led by Moises Duran who was three for five with two RBI. Brad Boyer was also two for three with two runs on the game.

The Golden Gophers will wrap up their Arizona trip against Oklahoma State later today on Feb. 23 at 5 p.m. - UM -
