Gopher Bats Find Early Success in 12-5 Victory Over Kansas

2/27/2026 10:46:00 PM | Baseball

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The University of Minnesota baseball program continued their four game series against the University of Kansas with game two tonight, finding early success at the plate to take down the Jayhawks 12-5 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Cole Selvig was dominant tonight, fanning nine Kansas hitters over 5.2 innings of work. Brandon Jaenke also made an impact on the mound for the Gophers, throwing three strikeouts over one scoreless inning of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Gophers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with a two-out solo home run off the bat of Weber Neels in the bottom of the first.

The Jayhawks failed to push any runs across before the Gophers built on their lead in the third inning. Back to back RBI singles from Easton Richter and Neels added two to the scoreboard before a three run home run from Charlie Sutherland blew the game open. Jack Bello capped off the inning with an RBI double off the wall in right center field, pushing the lead to 7-0.

Minnesota held Kansas without a run before building their lead to 11-0 the following inning. The Gopher bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs on a double steal situation and a pair of singles from Sutherland and Ty Allen.

The Jayhawks fought back, closing the gap to 11-2 with a solo home run and back to back doubles until Minnesota added some insurance in the sixth. Neels crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Gophers, bringing the score to 12-2 in favor of Minnesota. Kansas put a run on the scoreboard in the seventh and two runs in the ninth before the game was over.
