Minnesota Women's Swimming and Diving Impressive at Minnesota Challenge

"I am very happy with today," remarked Head Coach Jean Freeman. "Our team chemistry is the best its ever been and our swimmers are swimming well. Tonight was also senior night, and that is always very special. I will really miss those 10 swimmers."
Competition kicked off tonight with the 200-yard medley relay in which the Maroon and Gold captured the top two spots. The team of Shanna Gustafson, Melissa Schold, Megan Peters, and Megan Moore won the event with a time of 1:48.79.
The top eight spots in the 100-yard butterfly were take by Golden Gophers. Dana Baum placed first with her time of 57.91. Michelle Lieder placed second in 58.26, and Moore placed third.
In the 200-yard freestyle, the top eight spots were again taken by Minnesota. Kristin Rygg won the event with a time of 1:55.08. She was followed closely in second by Juleen Rodakowski and her time of 1:56.24.
Once again, Gold Country dominated the 100-yard freestyle, taking the top eight spots. Kate Hardt won the event with a time of 52.29. Dana Baum placed second with a time of 52,32, and Sara Vine came in third with a time of 52.57.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, Melissa Schold placed second by swimming the event in 2:23.58. Lindsay Somrock followed closely in second with a lifetime best time of 2:23.61.
In diving, Minnesota too the top four spots in the 1-meter diving competition and the top five spots in the 3-meter. Shannon Jackson won the 1-meter with a score of 273.50. Kim Bahmer came in second, and Rebecca Cornthwaite came in third. Cornthwaite then won the 3-meter competition with a team and seaosn best score of 476.80. Abbie Bowden and Jackson followed closely behind.
Competition will continue in two weeks for the Gophers as they travel to West Lafayette, Ind. for the Big Ten Championships on February 19-22.
