Women's Gymnastics Wins Best Of Minnesota Meet

finisheThe University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team swept all four events en route to winning the Best of Minnesota meet held at the Sports Pavilion with a season-high score of 195.875. Winona finished in second (183.65), Gustavus Adolphus in third (182.250) and Hamline in fourth (177.525). Junior Alicia Opsahl was named the meet MVP as she set a new career best in floor exercise (9.9) and tied a career best on the balance beam (9.9).

Freshman Laura Johnson won the all-around with a career-best score of 38.750. She also tied teammates Carolyn Yernberg for first on the vault (9.925) and Alicia Opsahl for first on bars (9.775).

On the vault, senior Leigh Dixon was third with a score of 9.8 as Minnesota swept the top-three spots. Dixon also claimed third on bars with a score of 9.65.

Senior Kelly Watson and Alicia Opsahl turned in career-best performances with scores of 9.9 to tie for first on the balance beam. Junior Mary Skokut tied a career best and finished tied for third with senior Jenny Alf with a score of 9.875.

Minnesota turned in their best effort of the evening on the floor exercise as five of the six gymnasts competing in the event set or tied career bests. Yernberg led the way with a score of 9.925, followed by Alicia Opsahl with a 9.9 and Skokut and Alf tied for third with scores of 9.875.

Minnesota (5-4) is next in action on Feb. 15, when they travel to Champaign, Ill., to take on Illinois. The meet will begin at 7 p.m.
