Wrestlers Destroy Northwestern, 41-3

th Minnesota won nine of 10 matches in a dominating 41-3 Big Ten dual win over Northwestern (5-9, 0-5 Big Ten) this afternoon at the Sports Pavilion. The Golden Gophers won their sixth straight dual and improved to 15-4 overall and 5-0 in the Big Ten. Minnesota posted two pins and five major decisions on the day. The Wildcats didn't get a take down in the match that started at 125 pounds until the 184-pound bout. Bobbe Lowe got things started at 125 pounds with a convincing 18-4 major decision over John Velez. Lowe had four takedowns and two three- point near falls in the victory. Ryan Lewis wasted no time in taking care of the Wildcats' Jon Ott at 133 pounds. Lewis took Ott down just 15 seconds into the bout and rode him for the final 2:45 of the period. After starting down in the second period, Lewis quickly took Ott down again and got him in a double-arm bar and pinned him at the 1:24 mark.

Derek Phillips kept the Golden Gophers unbeaten at 141 pounds, posting an 8-0 major decision over John Giacche. Phillips posted three takedowns and 3:45 of advantage time in the win. Jared Lawrence got the Gophers' second pin of the meet at 149 pounds, decking Josh Ballard in 2:36. Lawrence took Ballard down 52 seconds into the bout and worked him into a double-arm bar before posting the pin.

Luke Becker kept the string of bonus points going with an 18-5 major decision over Mike Kimberlin at 157 pounds. Becker had six takedowns and a three-point near fall in the match.

Jacob Volkmann posted a dominating 11-0 major decision over Jason Erwinski at 165 pounds. He rebounded from a surprising upset loss on Friday night to Michigan's Pat Owen. Josh McLay continued the rout with a 7-2 decision over Andrew Curran at 174 pounds. McLay posted a take down just eight seconds into the bout and never trailed.

Northwestern got on the board at 184 pounds when Brendan Curran decisioned Casey Flaherty 9-4. Flaherty led 3-2 in the first period but Curran had two straight takedowns to clinch the win. Damion Hahn scored a 13-5 major decision over Matt Delguyd at 197 pounds. Hahn had three takedowns in the third period to seal the win. Garrett Lowney won at heavyweight by forfeit to end the dual.

Minnesota returns to action on Friday at third-ranked Iowa. The match starts at 7 p.m.
