Heavyweight Garrett Lowney was the lone Golden Gopher to lose in the championship bracket. In the wrestlebacks, Bobbe Lowe (125) and Derek Phillips (141) won to keep all eight of UM's qualifiers alive in the tournament. Lowe also eliminated the first wrestler of favorite Oklahoma State with a 12-7 win over Skyler Holman.
Minnesota stands in fourth place with 23 points. Oklahoma State leads the team race with 35 points, followed by Oklahoma at 25.5 and Lehigh at 24.
At 133 pounds, No. 3 seed Lewis survived a major scare against Nebraska's Joey Malia. The Cornhusker took Lewis down early in the first and rolled him to his back, nearly for the fall. After a three- point near fall, Lewis reversed Malia to take the lead. After a tight second period that ended tied at seven, Lewis opened the final stanza with a takedown before pinning Malia at 5:32. It was Lewis' second fall of the tournament and team-leading 14th of the season. Lewis takes on unseeded Pat Garcia of Northern Iowa in the quarterfinals.
At 149 pounds, No. 2 seed Lawrence used a late takedown to gain a 10- 2 major decision win over Justin Giovinco of Pittsburgh. Lawrence led throughout and ended the bout with 3:18 of advantage time. The win was Lawrence's 30th of the season. He next faces No. 10 Dustin Manotti of Cornell. At 157 pounds, top-seeded Becker dominated Clovis Crane of Purdue to the tune of a 16-3 major decision. Becker tallied six takedowns and an astounding 5:30 of advantage time to move on to the next round. In the quarters, he will take on No. 9 Alex Tirapelle of Illinois.
No. 4 seed Volkmann became the fourth Golden Gopher to advance to the quarterfinals, edging Penn State's Doc Vecchio, 5-1, at 165 ponds. Volkmann scored a takedown in both the second and third period to gain his second career berth in the quarterfinals. There he will face No. 5 Tyron Woodley of Missouri. At 197 pounds, No. 6 seed Hahn narrowly avoided an upset to Dante Stone of Missouri, but prevailed, 4-2. With the match tied at two late in the third period, Hahn threw Stone with five seconds remaining for the winning points. In the quarterfinals, Hahn will wrestle Tom Grossman of Oklahoma, an upset winner over No. 3 Justin Ruiz of Nebraska.
At heavyweight, No. 9 seed John Testa took No. 8 Lowney down three times and did not allow a UM offensive point to cruise to a 7-3 win. Lowney moves to the consolation bracket where he will have the opportunity to eliminate another Oklahoma State grappler, Willie Gruenwald.
In wrestlebacks, Lowe registered a huge win with his 12-7 triumph over OSU's Holman at 125 pounds. Lowe came out on fire, taking the Cowboy down early and nearly posting a pin the the bout's first minute. Lowe led 8-3 at the end of one, and 9-6 at the end of two. The Golden Gopher quelled the OSU comeback attempt with an escape and takedown in the final stanza. Lowe faces Duke's Tommy Hoang in the next round of consolation matches.
Minnesota kept all its qualifiers in the tournament when Phillips edged Jared Sullivan of Chattanooga, 4-3, at 141 pounds. With the match tied at three in the third period, Phillips tallied an escape with 18 seconds remaining to gain the winning point. He battles No. 9 Scott Moore of Penn State in the next round of wrestlebacks.
