Six Wrestlers Advance in Championship Bracket at NCAA Championships

The two-time defending champion Golden Gophers stand in a tie for fifth place with Michigan State and Iowa at 12.5 points. Oklahoma State leads the team race after the first round with 19.5 points, followed by Lehigh (16), Illinois (15) and Oklahoma (14.5).
Lowe lost a tough 8-6 decision to No. 9 seed Jason Powell of Nebraska. Powell led throughout and Lowe was the victim of some controversial calls. At 133 pounds, Lewis began his quest for an individual national championship with his team-leading 13th fall of the season, pinning Justin Owens of Lock Haven in 2:16. Lewis led 4-1 at the time of the fall and moves on to face Joey Malia of Nebraska.
At 141 pounds, Northern Iowa's Dylan Long, the No. 3 seed, overwhelmed Phillips in a 10-0 major decision. The Panther racked up 4:04 of advantage time. Phillips faces Jared Sullivan of Chattanooga in the consolation bracket. Second-seeded Lawrence began his defense of his 149-pound national crown, posting a technical fall win over Anthony Coleman of Cleveland State in 6:39 (17-2). Lawrence registered five takedowns and five near-fall points to advance to face Pitt's Justin Giovinco in the second round.
At 157 pounds, defending 157-pound NCAA champ and No. 1 seed Luke Becker opened the 2003 national meet with a 10-4 win over Ben Cherrington of Boise State. Becker had over four minutes of advantage time and did not allow a BSU point until late in the second period. Becker takes on Clovis Crane of Purdue in the next round. At 165 pounds, No. 4 seed Jacob Volkmann overcame an early deficit to down Dustin Kawa of North Carolina State, 13-8. Kawa led 5-4 at the beginning of the second period, but Volkmann scored seven straight points to take the lead and the win. Volkmann faces Penn State's Doc Veccio in the second round.
No. 6 seed Hahn became the fifth Golden Gopher to move in the championship bracket, dropping Ryan McGrath of Rutgers, 7-1, at 197 pounds. Hahn led the entire match at did not allow a point until late in the final period. Hahn battles Missouri's Dante Stone in his next match. Finally, No. 8 seed Lowney downed Brad Steele of Wyoming, 8-5, at heavyweight to move on to face No. 9 John Testa of Clarion.
Session II of the 2003 NCAA Championships begins tonight at 6:30 p.m., at Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Mo. The national tournament runs through Saturday, March 22.
