Men's Hockey Takes Down St. Cloud State 5-3

The Golden Gophers jumped out to a first-period lead as Judd Stevens took a drop pass from Barry Tallackson and beat Jake Moreland with his wrister at 8:34. Less than four minutes to go, Jake Fleming put Minnesota up by two with his wrister from Joey Martin. The Golden Gophers outshot St. Cloud State 11-4 in the period.
In the second, St. Cloud State got two power-play opportunities in a span of 24 seconds and capitalized on both. Joe Motzko scored at 2:48 and 20 seconds later after Stevens was called for interference, he added his second goal of the game.
With the game knotted at two, Minnesota capitalized on its first power-play opportunity of the game. Keith Ballard's wrister between the circles beat Moreland at 7:37. On the Golden Gophers' next power-play opportunity, Troy Riddle scored on a Ballard rebound at 13:04.
Freshman Gino Guyer notched his 10th goal of the season as he cleaned up Tallackson's drive to the net at 18:03.
Leading 5-2, Minnesota allowed a late goal from Motzko at 16:47, but held on for the victory.
Travis Weber stopped 19 shots to earn the win as Minnesota outshot the Huskies 45-22. Moreland left the game after the second period after allowing five goals on 31 shots. Jason Montgomery stopped all 14 shots he faced in relief.
Minnesota will honor its seniors tomorrow night at Mariucci Arena. Matt DeMarchi, Nick Anthony and Chad Roberg will be recognized just prior to faceoff at 7:05 p.m.
The Golden Gophers will host a first-round playoff series next weekend at Mariucci Arena.
