Wrestling Advances Seven Golden Gophers to Big Ten Championships Semifinals

t Madison, Wis. -- Seven members of the University of Minnesota wrestling team advanced to the semifinals today at the 2003 Big Ten Championships at the UW Fieldhouse in Madison, Wis. Ryan Lewis (133 pounds), Derek Phillips (141), Jared Lawrence (149), Luke Becker (157), Jacob Volkmann (165), Damion Hahn (197) and Garrett Lowney (HWT) moved on to the next round which will be contested tonight at 6 p.m. Bobbe Lowe (125), Josh McLay (174) and Matt Nagel (184) are alive in the consolation bracket.

As a team, the Maroon and Gold leads the tournament with 65 points, followed by Iowa at 58.5, Illinois at 54 and Michigan at 52.

Top-seeded Ryan Lewis began his Big Ten title defense in dominating fashion, pinning Northwestern's Tommy Vargas in 2:12 and Purdue's Rene Hernandez in 6:49 for his team-leading 11th and 12th falls of the season. Lewis will take on No. 4 Josh Moore of Penn State in the semis. Lewis defeated Moore, 14-5. Third-seeded Derek Phillips had a thrilling match with No. 6 Luke Moffitt to advance to the next round. Moffitt led 7-2 late in the second period, but Phillips stormed back to tie the bout at seven with a reversal escape and takedown. Phillips rode out Moffitt for the final 30 seconds of the third period to push the bout to overtime. After a scoreless extra period, Phillips again rode Moffitt for 30 seconds to win the match, 7-7, via tiebreaker.

At 149 pounds, No.1 Jared Lawrence pinned Josh Ballard of Northwestern in 4:27 in the first round before posting a 15-3 major decision on Penn State's No. 8 Nate Galloway. Lawrence takes on No. 4 Ryan Churella of Michigan in the semis. No. 2 seed Luke Becker opened the defense of his 2002 conference crown with a 5-3 victory of No. 7 Nate Wachter of Penn State. He faces No. 6 Ryan Bertin of Michigan, an upset winner over Illinois' No. 3 Alex Tirapelle, in the semifinals.

Third-seeded Jacob Volkmann went 2-0 to move onto the next round, posting a two major decision wins. Volkmann shut out Indiana's Alex LaPointe, 10-0, before downing Northwestern's Jason Erwinski, 11-2. Volkmann battles No. 7 Mike Kulczycki of Michigan in the semis. Kulczycki upset No. 2 Johnny Clark of Ohio State to advance. At 197 pounds, No. 2 Damion Hahn showed some of his offensive arsenal in a 9- 3 win over No. 7 Tyrone Byrd of Illinois. Hahn, the defending champ at 184 pounds, takes on No. 6 Kyle Smith of Michigan, a upset winner over No. 3 Ryan Fulsaas of Iowa.

Finally, No. 3 Garrett Lowney used a third-period takedown to edge No. 6 Justin Staebler of Wisconsin. Lowney moves on to face No. 2 Tommy Rowlands of Ohio State in the semis. Lowney has never defeated the defending NCAA Champion Buckeye.
