Minnesota Gains 42 Winter Big Ten All-Academic Accolades

mThe Big Ten Conference announced that 42 student-athletes from the University of Minnesota have earned Academic All-Big Ten honors for the winter season. Minnesota sports included in the winter were men's and women's basketball, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's swimming and wrestling. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.

Women's swimming had 16 members eligible, including Sarah Solfelt (Eden Praire, Minn.) who had a 4.0 in finance/Spanish. Bjorn Lundin (Bjaerred, Sweden) was one of nine men's swimmers to be eligible with a 3.84. The women's gymnastics team had six members selected, including Mary Skokut (Carmel, Ind.) who has a 3.94. Guillermo Alvarez (Denver, Colo.) had a 3.74 and was one of four athletes eligible for men's gymnastics. Khadidja Anderson (Stockholm, Sweden) had a 3.62 and was one of four women's basketball players to receive the honors, while Rick Rickert (Duluth, Minn.) had a 3.18 for the men's basketball team. Josh McLay (Hastings, Minn.) claimed the honors for the wrestling team.
