Glen Perkins named NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week

thThe National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association named Minnesota freshman lefthander Glen Perkins (Stillwater, Minn.) the National Pitcher of the Week for April 22.

Perkins pitched his first career complete-game shutout in the Big Ten series opener against Illinois on Friday, Apr. 18. In that game he struck out a career-best 15 batters with only one walk. With that performance he also became the third Gopher pitcher this season, joining Jay Gagner (Cumberland, Wis.) and C.J. Woodrow, to claim Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honors.

The freshman lefthander got nine of the last 10 outs by striking out Illinois hitters. With win Perkins improved to 4-0 in Big Ten with a 2.03 ERA. Overall he is 5-1, with a 2.83 ERA and 63 strikeouts. Perkins has also won five straight decisions.

Minnesota will be back in action on Wednesday, Apr. 23 when it travels to Cedar Falls, Iowa to take on Northern Iowa at 3 p.m. Minnesota will then head to Bloomington, Ind. to take on the Indiana Hoosiers in a four-game Big Ten series Friday through Sunday Apr. 25-27. The first game will take place Friday, Apr. 25 at 2 p.m. On Saturday, Apr. 26, the two teams will play in a doubleheader starting at 12 noon and the final game will be played Sunday, Apr. 27 at 12 noon. All four games will be webcast on gophersports.com and Saturday and Sunday's games will be on KCCO (950 AM).
