Potter Sets Record at Drake Relays

Mitch Potter set a school record in the 400 meters, highlighting Minnesota's performance at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday. Potter took the title with an NCAA regional qualifier of 45.16 seconds, topping Tom Gerding's previous record of 45.38 set at the 2002 Big Ten Outdoor meet. Potter's time is currently the second- fastest in the NCAA.
Adam Steele finished behind Potter, earning a regional qualifier of 46.26. Steele went on to anchor the 4x400-meter relay of Mikael Jakobsson, Andy Wohlin and Robb Merritt that placed fifth and qualified regionally with a time of 3:07.96.
Luke Mullranin and Trent Riter also earned regional qualifiers, both running to second-place finishes. Mullranin came in at 9:03.08 in the steeplechase and Riter finished in 1:50.76 in the 800 meters. Martin Robeck came in fourth with a regional qualifier of 4:04.62 in the Pat Deveny Special Mile.
In the field, Lynden Reder led the Gophers with a sixth-place regional qualifier of 196 feet, 9 inches in the hammer throw. Karl Erickson</ a> placed ninth in the shot put with a toss of 58-2 1/2, and Thomas Flensborg-Madsen leapt another regional qualifier of 49-3 to take ninth in the triple jump.
Minnesota travels to compete next at the Iowa Twilight Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 3.
