The Big Ten Conference has announced that the University of Minnesota First Varsity Eight has been named the Big Ten's Rowing Boat of the Week for its performance the past weekend against UCLA. It is Minnesota's second honor in two years and the first this season.
The Gophers finished 10 seconds ahead of the Bruins' boat, Saturday at Lake Phalen in St. Paul, Minn. Minnesota finished with a time of 6:40.1 to UCLA's time of 6:50.2, a full boat length ahead of the Bruins. Minnesota's winning boat consisted of Jackie Gagner at stroke, Amber Riopel, Heidi Rose, Melissa Roche, Sam Wangsgard, Jill Peters, Jessi Johnson, Kirsten Kosloske at bow and coxswain Katherine Nelson.
The Gophers head into tough competition this weekend when Minnesota participates in the Big Ten Championships, May 3, in Columbus, Ohio. The Maroon and Gold will compete against four ranked teams in the league championships: No. 6 Michigan, No. 10 Michigan State, No. 11 Ohio State and No. 17 Iowa.
