Gopher Rowing Heads to Big Ten Championships

Minnesota Heads to Big Ten Championships
Minnesota will head to Columbus, Ohio to participate in the Big Ten Championships, May 3. The Golden Gophers will compete in five of the six events for the championship.

The Gophers will gain the most points from the First and Second Varsity Eight races. Minnesota enters the championships seeded fifth in the First Eight and sixth in the Second Varsity Eight.

Order of Events
Minnesota's first event of the day will begin with the First Novice Eight race at 8 a.m. The Gophers are listed in the first heat. Listed below are the order of events.

The Conference champion team shall be determined by accumulation of points from the following six races using the scoring system. In the event of a tie in points for the Conference team championship, the Conference champion shall be the team whose boat finished higher in the First Varsity Eight race.

The Big Ten Conference has announced that the University of Minnesota First Varsity Eight has been named the Big Ten's Rowing Boat of the Week for its performance the past weekend against UCLA. It is Minnesota's second honor in two years and the first this season.

The Gophers finished 10 seconds ahead of the Bruins' boat, Saturday at Lake Phalen in St. Paul, Minn. Minnesota finished with a time of 6:40.1 to UCLA's time of 6:50.2, a full boat length ahead of the Bruins. Minnesota's winning boat consisted of Jackie Gagner at stroke, Amber Riopel , Heidi Rose, Melissa Roche, Sam Wangsgard, Jill Peters, Jessi Johnson, Kirsten Kosloske at bow and coxswain Katherine Nelson.

Minnesota Against Big Ten Competition
Minnesota hosted its first-ever spring race two weeks ago when Big Ten opponents Iowa and Wisconsin came to town. The Golden Gopher First Varsity Eight team finished second behind Iowa. In a close race, the Hawkeyes finished in 6:39.0, followed by the Gophers in 6:42.3 and Wisconsin in 6:47.6. The Gopher Varsity Four team came in third in their race, while the Gophers finished second in the Second Novice Eight race, Second Varsity Eight team and the First Novice Eight race.

In the Polls
Four of the seven teams from the Big Ten Conference are ranked in the the USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Varsity Eight Coaches Poll. The four ranked teams in the league championships are No. 6 Michigan, No. 10 Michigan State, No. 11 Ohio State and No. 17 Iowa.

Big Ten Awards
The Big Ten Conference will have an awards ceremony following the First Varsity Eight race at 4 p.m. With the recognition of each winning boat, the Big Ten will announce the All-Big Ten first and second teams.

The Athlete, Freshman & Coach of the Year shall be selected by a vote of the coaches due in the Conference office by Monday, May 5th and will be announced at that time.

The Golden Gophers will take next weekend off to prepare for the South/Central Region Championships, May 17-18.
