Minnesota Rowing Completes First Day of Region Sprints

Minnesota's First Varsity Eight placed third in its heat and fifth in the semifinals, good enough for the Petite Finals race tomorrow. The team consisting of Kirsten Kosloske at bow, Jessi Johnson, Jill Peters, Sam Wangsgard, Melissa Roche, Heidi Rose, Amber Riopel, Jackie Gagner at stroke and Katherine Nelson as coxswain, will race at 9:10 a.m. tomorrow morning. The Gophers will compete against Miami, Notre Dame, No. 15 Iowa, Duke and Clemson.
The Gophers' Second Varsity Eight will also be racing in the Petite Final tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. Other schools participating in the final is Clemson, Kansas, Texas, Tennessee and Kansas State. The Gophers' team of Lida Storch at bow, Lora Sweezy, Alison Zylstra, Andrea Pierce, Mariel Gartner, Beth Ratterman, Angela Hedin, Beth Hornby at stroke and Leah Gross as coxswain, placed fifth in the heats and fourth in the semifinals to qualify for the Petite Final.
The Gophers' First Varsity Four team of Meghan Johnson, Jenna Buskohl, Sarah Reed, Katie Biese and Catie Hill at coxswain will be the lone Minnesota shell to compete in the Grand Final. The Gophers finished second in their heat competition and third in their semifinals, garnering one of the top six spots in the region. The Gophers will compete against Michigan, Iowa, Ohio State, Michigan State and Clemson in the Grand Final, slated for 9:40 a.m.
The events were delayed this morning due to poor weather conditions. The first race did not start until 11 a.m. because of thunder storms in the area. During racing, the temperature ranged from the upper 60's to the mid 70's, with very humid conditions. Heavy rain and wind occurred during the racing.
