This past weekend Minnesota won three of four games from Ohio State to claim its second straight Big Ten regular season title. The first game of the weekend matched up the two top starters in the Big Ten in Perkins and Ohio State's Scott Lewis. Perkins pitched his sixth complete game in Big Ten play, pitching nine innings, giving up one earned run and striking out nine batters.
With the win Perkins moved to 9-1 on the season. He also became the first pitcher in Big Ten history to go 8-0 in Big Ten play. With the nine strikeouts, Perkins moved to 101 on the season becoming only the third Gopher pitched to record over 100 strikeouts in a season.
The win on May 16 clinched the Big Ten regular season title for Minnesota for the third time in four seasons. It also snapped Lewis' 15-game winning streak, and was his first career loss in Big Ten play.
Minnesota will host the Big Ten Tournament starting Wednesday, May 21. The first game will feature the fourth-seeded Penn State Nittany Lions against the fifth-seeded Northwestern Wildcats at 12:05 p.m. The second game will take place at 3:35 and will feature the third-seeded Michigan Wolverines against the No. 6 Indiana Hoosiers. Minnesota will play the lowest seeded winner of the two games on Thursday, May 22 at 7:05 p.m.
