Lindsay Whalen and Janel McCarville Make USA Team Rosters

Lindsay Whalen and Janel McCarville, will represent the United States and the University of Minnesota on two teams this summer.

Whalen, a senior from Hutchinson, Minn., earned one of a dozen roster spots on the USA Basketball World Championships for Young Women Team.

The USA Young Women National Team will train July 7-24 in Colorado Springs, New York and Boston, before competing in the inaugural FIBA World Championship For Young Women in Sibenik, Croatia, July 25 - Aug. 3.

Joining Whalen on the USA World Championship For Young Team, which is comprised of athletes 21-years-old and younger (born on or after Jan. 1, 1982), are: Seimone Augustus (LSU / Baton Rouge, La.); Alana Beard (Duke / Shreveport, La.); Ebony Hoffman (Southern California / Harbor City, Calif.); Kristen Mann (UC Santa Barbara / Santa Ana, Calif.); Caity Matter (Ohio State / Bluffton, Ohio); Nicole Ohlde (Kansas State / Clay Center, Kan.); Shawntinice Polk (Arizona / Hanford, Calif.); Cappie Pondexter (Rutgers / Chicago, Ill.); Christi Thomas (Georgia / Buford, Ga.); Kendra Wecker (Kansas State / Marysville, Kan.) and Tanisha Wright (Penn State / West Mifflin, Pa.). The team will be coached by Ohio State's Jim Foster; assisted by Harvard's Kathy Delaney-Smith and Hofstra's Felisha Legette-Jack.

Whalen, along with Hoffman, Ohlde and Pondexter, teamed up last summer to capture a gold medal in Brazil and helped the United States qualify for the 2003 FIBA World Championship For Young Women.

McCarville, a junior from Stevens Point, Wis., will see her first international playing experience as a member of the USA Basketball Women's Pan-American Games Team.

The USA Women's Pan-American Team will begin training on July 17 in Boston. From July 21-25, the team will train in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba and play three exhibition games against Cuba's Pan-American Team. Following the USA's Cuban trip, the squad will return to the U.S. to train at the University of South Florida from July 26-29 before heading to the Dominican Republic for the Pan-American Games. Competition will be held from August 2-9 in Santo Domingo.

In addition to McCarville, the remaining members of the 2003 USA Women's Pan American Games basketball team are: Jenni Benningfield (Vanderbilt University / Nashville, Tenn.); Rebekkah Brunson (Georgetown / Washington, D.C.); Jamie Carey (Texas / Austin, Texas); Roneeka Hodges (Transferring from Louisiana State / Baton Rouge, La.); Laurie Koehn (Kansas State / Manhattan, Kan.); Loree Moore (Tennessee / Knoxville, Tenn.); Nicole Powell (Stanford / Stanford, Calif.); Ann Strother (Connecticut / Hartford, Conn.); Lindsay Taylor (UC Santa Barbara / Santa Barbara, Calif.); Iciss Tillis (Duke / Durham, N.C.); and Barbara Turner (Connecticut / Hartford, Conn.). The team will be coached by Virginia's Debbie Ryan; assisted by Indiana's Kathi Bennett and Albany's Trina Patterson.

The two USA teams will be joined by the Australia and Brazil young women national teams for a series of exhibition games in Boston from July 15-19.
