Senior Shani Marks needed just one jump in the preliminary competition to advance to Saturday's triple jump final at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif., on Thursday. Marks is the only member of the Minnesota women's track & field team competing in the championships.

Marks, the Big Ten champion in the event, landed a jump of 44 feet, 6 3/4 inches, the second-best qualifying leap in the trials. Marks fouled on her first attempt, hit on her second and passed on her third jump of the preliminary competition. Nebraska's Ineta Radevica owns the top jump in the qualifying round with a leap of 44-9 3/4.
