competiBehind the strength of top 10 finishes in men's hockey, wrestling, men's track & field, and men's swimming & diving, the University of Minnesota placed 11th in the 2002-03 NACDA Directors' Cup competition for NCAA Division I. The Golden Gophers' 845 point, 11th-place showing is their second-highest in the 10-year history of the award, presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) to the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country. Minnesota posted its best ranking of seventh place last season with 866.5 points.

Stanford captured the Directors' Cup for the ninth consecutive year. The Cardinal tallied 1,330.5 points, surpassing runner-up Ohio State by 255.75 points. Stanford recorded points in the maximum of 10 women's and 10 men's sports. Michigan (1,034.3), Texas (1,011) and Penn State (993) round out the top five.

The Golden Gophers captured the NCAA title in men's hockey, and finished second in wrestling, seventh in men's swimming & diving, and eighth in men's indoor track & field. UM's ninth-place outdoor track & field finish did not count toward the final standings as only one track season's point total may be applied. Women's hockey finished fourth in the nation, but the sport is not included in the Directors' Cup scoring.

Minnesota earned points in 18 sports: men's cross country, volleyball, women's basketball, men's and women's gymnastics, men's hockey, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's indoor track & field, wrestling, men's golf, softball, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's outdoor track & field, and baseball.
