U of M Alumni Association Sponsors Musical Cheer Contest
7/28/2003 12:00:00 AM | Athletics
To enter the contest, applicants must submit an official entry form along with an original musical cheer that expresses, in 15 seconds or less, Minnesota's Golden Gopher spirit. Information about the contest, including rules and the official entry form, are available online at www.alumni.umn.edu/100. Deadline for submissions is Oct. 1, 2003 at 4:30 p.m. Central Standard Time.
"I envision the winning entry to be of the same caliber as Michigan's "Let's Go Blue!" cheer," said Margaret Carlson, UMAA executive director. "The entry we select will be spirited and bold with the staying power to foster a maroon-and-gold tradition at Gopher games for the next century."
The grand-prize winner will receive $2,500 cash, additional prizes, and the opportunity to direct the University of Minnesota Marching Band at a sporting event. The song will be unveiled at UMAA's 100th birthday party on January 30, 2004.
This won't be the first time members of the public have competed to be the next composer of a University of Minnesota song. "The Minnesota Rouser" was the result of a competition sponsored by the Minneapolis Tribune in 1909 when "Hail! Minnesota" was deemed too stately to bring fans to their feet at football games.
The University of Minnesota Alumni Association is a 57,000-member organization whose mission is to create lifelong connections to alumni, students, parents and friends of the University; advocate educational excellence; and build pride, spirit and community.
