The University of Minnesota women's soccer team defeated Indiana, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon in St. Paul, Minn. The Golden Gophers improve to 4-2-1 on the season and even their mark in the Big Ten at 1-1-0.
The Golden Gophers began strong as sophomore Becky Dellaria split a pair of defenders to fire a shot that went just wide in the third minute.
Minnesota broke the scoreless tie as freshman Haley Lentsch beat a Hoosier defender, but her shot hit off the left post. The ball bounced out front and senior Amanda McMahon was able to slam it back home for her third goal of the season in the 15th minute.
With less than three minutes to go in the half, McMahon's corner kick bounced out to the top of the 18 yard box to freshman Allison Raino. All alone, her shot sailed towards the top of the goal, but was punched away by Indiana goalkeeper Shaunna Daugherty.
Indiana outshot Minnesota 9-4 in the first 45 minutes, but the Golden Gophers held a 2-1 edge in shots on goal.
In the second half, the Golden Gophers increased their lead to two as Allison Raino's header went right to Dellaria. She raced past a Hoosier defender and beat newly-inserted goaltender Stacey Van Boxmeer in the 48th minute.
The Hoosiers turned up the heat following the Minnesota goal and outshot the Golden Gophers 15-4 in the second half, including a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal. Indiana finally broke through as Lauren Lamping's centering kick from the far right side was put in by a Kim Grodek header in the 88th minute.
The Golden Gophers managed to run out the remaining time and claimed its first Big Ten win of the season. Minnesota snapped a seven-match Big Ten losing streak.
Karli Kopietz led the Golden Gophers with seven saves in the match. Indiana's Daugherty stopped one shot in the first and Van Boxmeer made two stops in the second half.
Minnesota will hit the road next week for a pair of matches in the state of Michigan. The Golden Gophers will meet Michigan State on Friday and Michigan on Sunday afternoon
