Michigan Defeats Depleted Golden Gopher Wrestling Team 31-4

The match began with a battle between a pair of top-10 heavyweights. Sixth-ranked Greg Wagner earned a 5-1 decision over eighth-ranked Cole Konrad of the Golden Gophers. Minnesota responded at 125 pounds with a 14-2 major decision by 11th-ranked Bobbe Lowe over the Wolverines' Shaun Newton. The 4-3 score would be the Golden Gophers' final lead of the match.
The Wolverines claimed the final eight matches including Foley Dowd's 11-0 major decision over Quincy Osborn at 133 pounds. At 141, Danny Williams replaced regular Tommy Owen in the lineup, but was defeated by a 4-0 decision against fourth-ranked Foley Dowd.
At 157, 16th-ranked Matt Nagel went down to the wire for the second straight week against defending NCAA Champion Ryan Bertin of the Wolverines. Bertin got a second-period takedown and held on for a 2-1 victory.
Michigan's Pat Owen got the lone pin of the day over Casey Flaherty in 1:33. Flaherty was filling in for Volkmann who missed his seventh straight match because of an eye injury.
The Wolverines closed out the match with three straight decisions, including Chase Verdroon's 8-3 victory over Mike Schmidt at 197. Schmidt was filling in for Hahn who missed his fourth straight match because of injury.
Minnesota returns to action next weekend at Williams Arena. The Golden Gophers host Wisconsin on Friday night at 7 p.m. and faces Purdue on Sunday at 2 p.m.
