Minnesota came back from an 18-point first half deficit but lost to Indiana 86-81 in overtime this afternoon at Williams Arena. The Gophers battled back in the second half and sent the game to overtime on a Kris Humphries short jumper with 11 seconds left in the game. The Hoosiers (10-6, 4-1 Big Ten) never trailed in overtime and dropped the Gophers to 8-9 overall and 0-5 in the Big Ten.

Indiana opened its largest lead of the game of 18 points with 3:21 left in the first half at 42-24. The Golden Gophers responded by scoring the last 10 points of the half to narrow the halftime score to 42-34. The Gophers forced three turnovers in the last 2:30 of the half and Michael Bauer scored five quick points before the break.

Indiana fired an impressive 59 percent from the field in the first half, including 6-of-11 from three-point range. The Gophers managed to stay in the game despite a frigid 32.5 percent clip from the field (13-40).

Minnesota staged an impressive rally to open the second half. After Bracey Wright drilled a trey on Indiana's first possession of the second half, Minnesota went on a 14-5 run to pull within two points at 50-48 with 12:36 left. The teams traded hoops on the ensuing possessions but Roderick Wilmont nailed a jumper to put Indiana back up 54-50. Adam Boone rallied with the next five points, including a three from the top of the arc to give the Gophers their first lead at 55-54 with 10:37 remaining. Indiana recaptured the lead and opened a 62-57 edge on a Wright put back.

Minnesota took its largest lead at 69-65 on a Humphries bucket, part of a string where he scored eight straight for the Gophers. Indiana went on a 9-2 run to lead 74-71 with 1:27 but Minnesota kept scrapping. Ben Johnson hit a leaner at the 1:04 mark to cut the deficit to one point. On the other end, Indiana grabbed the offensive rebound off a missed field goal and Minnesota fouled Donald Perry, who made one of two at the line with 22 seconds left. Humphries hit the game-tying shot with 11 seconds to push the game into overtime.

Indiana quickly took a 81-77 lead in overtime on six points by A.J. Moye. A Johnson hoop got the Gophers within two but that was as close as Minnesota would get in the extra session.

Post-Game Quotes

Indiana Head Coach Mike Davis

?This is a great place to be. It's a great group of players who?ve supported each other and never given up throughout the season. I think our pre-conference schedule helped toughen us up for conference play.?

?Dan Monson has done a good job coaching Minnesota. It's tough because it's just a matter of getting that first win to pick your team up when you?re struggling. We struggled early in the season as a team but once we were able to get a couple of wins in a row, our team started playing better.?

?This is a big win for us. We played well and did a good job keeping (Kris) Humphries contained in the first half. He is a tough player to match up with and he started playing very well in the second half. Our team did a good job of staying in system throughout the game, even when they were on a big run against us.?

Minnesota Head Coach Dan Monson

?Obviously this is a tough result to have when you are struggling like we are right now. I think we played well today but we started off slowly and that ended up being a big difference. We also did not take advantage of some of the opportunities we had the way we would have liked to.?

?We dug a big hole for ourselves in the first half. I was proud of the way that our players fought back. You can?t fault the effort of our team today. They hung in there the whole game. This week including the Purdue game, I thought we competed and continued to get better.?

?Right now, we are in a hole and we just need to keep digging to get out of it. When you are struggling as a team like we are right now, you?re mindset can be fragile in close situations. These are situations that we have not been in the last couple of weeks. However, they?ve done a good job of staying confident despite our struggles.?

On Maurice Hargrow's transfer
?That situation did not have any bearing on today's outcome. The mindset is to go out there as a team and not to concentrate on individuals. We feel good about the way our team played this week. We just need to get over the hump. With Hargrow transferring, we are a little shorthanded. That does not change our mindset of getting things turned around in a positive direction this season.?

Minnesota guard Adam Boone

?I knew we would fight back and it was exciting to come back like that.?

?It was exciting for me and the team. I felt that once we got the lead that we would win the game.?

?The way that we got into overtime, scoring on our last possession?we thought that we would pull it out. But they got too many offensive rebounds down the stretch.?

Minnesota forward Stan Gaines

?I am proud of the way we hung around. We definitely showed character. It takes a lot to come back from an 18-point deficit and then win on top of that.?

?We are headed in the right direction and we still haven?t turned the corner.?

?We found a way to come back at the half with the help of Brent (Lawson) and Aaron (Robinson) with the spark off the bench.?

Minnesota guard Ben Johnson

?We have a lot of character and we always fight and scrap but we definitely have learned after the last two games that we cannot get down by 18 to 20 points.?

?We knew in the second half, it was going to be a dogfight. We used a lot of energy to tie it up and in the end we didn?t have enough juice. If we keep on playing like this, we will pull one of these games out.?
