WisThe Minnesota women's swimming and diving team finished second in a Quad Dual Saturday in Madison. The Gophers defeated conference rivals Purdue (199-153) and Illinois (193-159), but fell short of Wisconsin (226-126). Last week, coach Jean Freeman emphasized the importance of performing well against Purdue as the Gophers lost to the Boilermakers at the Big Ten Championships in 2003 and thus should be pleased with Saturday's performance.

The Gophers strongest performance Saturday came in the 3 M diving in which Rebecca Cornthwaite captured first place with a score of 516.90. Teammates Abbie Bowden and Shannon Jackson also faired well in this event. Bowden finished in third place earning a score of 492.90 and Jackson's score of 462.20 was enough to finish fourth. Each of these scores exceed that needed to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships in this event. In the 1 M dive, Cornthwaite took third place with a score of 269.95 and Bowden finished fourth (260.45).

Senior Juleen Rodakowski earned the Gophers a first place finish in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:04.04. She also clocked a second place time in the 100 fly (56.70) and Sarah Bohlsen took third in this event with a time of (57.29). Bohlsen continued to swim strong as a member of the third place team in the 200 medley relay. She and teammates Megan Moore, Melissa Schold, and Katy Coombe earned a time of 1:46.69.

In addition, backstroke continues to be another strength for senior Megan Moore. She managed a second place finish in the 200 with a time of 2:04.82. Kate Wind followed close behind at 2:06.65, capturing third place.

Moreover, senior Melissa Schold also contributed to the Gophers solid performance finishing third in both the 100 (1:04.69) and 200 (2:21.83) breaststroke. Freshman Erika Bjorklund finished in fourth place clocking a time of 1:06.51.

Furthermore, sophomore Kate Hardt earned a third place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:51.69. Freshman Valerie Tukey finished in fourth (1:52.70). Tukey also took third place in the 500 free (5:00.13).

Look for the Gophers in action at home next weekend as they host the Minnesota Challenge at the University Aquatic Center.
