rankeSophomore Matt Nagel was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week after leading the Golden Gophers to a pair of wins against ranked opponents last week. It is the first league honor for the Frazee, Minn., native.

Nagel was instrumental in Minnesota's 20-15 win vs. No. 11 Arizona State and 17-16 upset of No. 4 Nebraska in Rochester, Minn., on Jan. 1. Each of Nagel's wins at 157 pounds began Minnesota rallies which led to the two wins.

Trailing the Sun Devils, 15-9, with three matches to go, Nagel upset 10th-ranked Brian Stith, 8-2, to pull Minnesota within three points. The Golden Gophers won the final two matches to claim a 20-15 win.

In the upset of No. 4 Nebraska, Minnesota trailed 16-6 with three matches remaining. Trailing 5-1 entering the third period, Nagel registered a pair of takedowns, including one with 10 seconds to go, to force overtime. With a takedown 16 seconds into overtime, Nagel kept Minnesota's hopes alive with an 8-6 upset of No. 17 B.J. Wright. The Golden Gophers won the final two matches to hand the Cornhuskers their first loss of the season.

Nagel and the eighth-ranked Golden Gophers (3-1) return to action next week at the National Duals in Cleveland, Ohio, Jan. 17-18.
