Kellen Briggs Named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week

WCHAUniversity of Minnesota sophomore goaltender Kellen Briggs (Colorado Springs, Colo./ Millard North HS) has been named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week, following his outstanding performance last Saturday in Minnesota's 5-2 win over defending NCAA Champion Denver in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game.

Briggs stopped a career-high 32 shots, including 18 in the third period, to lead the No. 7 Golden Gophers over the sixth-ranked Pioneers. He Briggs held the Pioneers scoreless until midway through the second period, allowed only one even-strength goal in the game, and helped hold Denver to just one power-play goal in 10 opportunities. Briggs is now 8-1-0 over his last nine starts between the pipes dating back to last year.

Minnesota heads to Anchorage, Alaska this weekend for the 2004 Nye Frontier Classic. The Golden Gophers (1-0-0) will take on Massachusetts (1-0-0) on Friday, Oct. 15, at 8: 07 p.m., Central time. Minnesota will face either host Alaska Anchorage or Canisius on Saturday, Oct. 16. The third-place game is at 7:07 p.m., followed by the championship contest at 10:07 p.m. None of the games will be televised, but will be broadcast on WCCO AM 830.
