Gopher Rowing Opens 2004-05 Campaign at Home

raceThe University of Minnesota women's rowing team opened the 2004-05 season at home, hosting the Head of the Mississippi, today in Minneapolis. The Gophers won the Women's Open 8+ race, the Open 4+ race and the Freshmen/Novice 8+ events.

Minnesota took first and second in the Women's Open 8+ event. The Gophers' First Varsity Eight boat (Minnesota A) finished in a time of 13:26 to win the event. Minnesota's winning boat held coxswain Kristi Branigan, Cheryl Wick at stroke, Beth Ratterman, Vilma Stragyte, Erika Bartkute, Andrea Pierce, Sam Wangsgard, Katie Biese and Lida Storch at bow.

The Minnesota B boat of coxswain Megan Flannery, Jillian Casey, Berit Tomten, Jenna Buskohl, Laura Jatautaite, Sally Olson, Katie Engel, Megan Stuhlfaut and Tina Cho, finished second overall with a time of 14:02.

The Gophers packed a one-two-punch in the Open 4+ race as well. Minnesota A (First Varsity Four) finished with a time of 15:43, while Minnesota B placed second with a time of 15:48. Minnesota's A shell had Carla Balleceras the coxswain, Christine O'Donnell, Heidi Bechtel, Synnove Flesland and Rachel Hotkowski. Minnesota's B boat contained coxswain Kaja Tally, Liz Ponder, Maggie Armstrong and Jennifer Sharpe.

The Golden Gophers added another win in the Freshman/Novice 8+ race.The Gophers' First Novice Eight came in at a time of 16:19. The boat had Alanna Hjortland as the coxswain, Mary Weinzierl, Lauren VanProosdy, Katie Simpson, Catherine Casey, Jennifer Falor, Carina Enbody, Paige Hanson and Kelsey Underdahl.

Minnesota's Novice B team finished fifth overall with a time of 18:14. Stephanie Holzwart was the coxswain, followed by Alissa Almquist at stroke, Jessica Wallander, Catherine Malovrh, Ashley Kollberg, Caitlin Smith, Amanda Howlett, Kali Wolfgram and Kelly Wynn at bow.

The Gophers also had an entry in the Open Doubles. The twin pair of Anja Kroll and Ashford Kroll finished with a time of 19:47.

The Maroon and Gold will take a trip to Rockford, Ill., and participate in the Head of the Rock Regatta, Sunday, Oct. 10.
