WSD: Gophers Defeat Iowa State, 194-98

evenThe University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team opened the 2004-05 season with a 194-98 win over Iowa State, tonight, in Ames, Iowa. The Gophers swept the competition, winning all 16 events contested. The Gophers won both relays, while Kate Hardt added three individual wins.

Hardt added her first win in the 200-yard freestyle. She clocked a time of 1:52.76, while Jennifer Chang finished second in the event with a time of 1:54.76. Hardt won her second event, this time in the 500 free. Hardt chipped in a time of 5:01.99, defeating Iowa State, Lydia Smirniotis 5:18.52. Her final win of the evening came in the 200 individual medley. She finished in a time of 2:08.14.

Sarah Perrott chipped in two wins herself in the 50 and 100 frees. Perrott finished the 50 free with a time of 23.92, followed by Katy Coombe (24.10) and Jennifer Hasling (24.48) in third. Perrott continued her winning ways with a 52.52 time in the 100 free, good enough for first.

Mary Patrek added two wins, both in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. She won the 100 free in 1:05.79, while Julia Quinn finished second in 1:06.05. Patrek added a time of 2:22.83 in the 200 breast for the win. Like Perrott and Patrek, Katie Wind added two event wins herself. She won the 100 back (58.03) and the 200 back (2:04.67). Valerie Tukey won the 1000 free, finishing in 10:25.16, while Sarah Solfelt won the 200 butterfly in 2:06.76. Amy Cahoy won the 100 fly in a time of 59.69.

The Gophers started the night with a relay win in the 200 medley. Wind, Bridget McCoy, Solfelt and Coombe combined for a time of 1:47.51. The relay of Hasling, Vine, Coombe and Perrott won the 400 free relay in 3:32.18.

In diving action, Abbie Bowden won the 3-meter action (317.10) and the 1-meter (284.85).

The Gophers host Iowa next Saturday. The dual meet begins at 1 p.m. at the University Aquatic Center.
