MHK: Kellen Briggs Named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week
11/1/2004 12:00:00 AM | Athletics
Briggs stopped 65 of 69 shots on goal in the two victories for a .942 save percentage, surrendered just two even-strength goals, posted three shutout periods and blanked the Mavericks in the one overtime. In the Golden Gophers' 9-2 win last Friday, Briggs stopped a career-high 40 shots, including all 22 of MSU's shots in the third period to preserve the win. In Minnesota's 3-2 overtime win on Saturday, he stopped 25 of 27 shots - including five in overtime - to help lead the Maroon and Gold to the sweep.
On the season, Briggs is 5-1-0 with a team-best 1.66 goals-against average and a .940 save percentage. He has allowed three or more goals only once this season - in a 4-2 loss at North Dakota on Oct. 22 - and he is 12-2-0 in his last 14 starts, dating to last season.
The award is the second Defensive Player of the Week honor for Briggs this season (Oct. 11).
Fourth-ranked Minnesota continues its four-game homestand this weekend with the Border Battle against arch-rival and fifth-ranked Wisconsin on Friday-Saturday, Nov. 5-6. Both games will face off at 7:07 p.m., and will be broadcast on Fox Sports Net North and WCCO 830 AM.
