WSD: Gophers In Second After First Day of Minnesota Invitational

sThe University of Minnesota women's swimming and diving team is in second place following the first day of competition at the Minnesota Invitational at the University Aquatic Center. The Gophers scored 264 points this evening, trailing Wisconsin with 352 points. Nebraska is in third place (187) and Iowa is fourth (175).

The evening started with a close race in the 200 free relay. The Gophers' team of Katy Coombe, Jennifer Hasling, Sara Vine and Sarah Perrott was touched out by Wisconsin and took second place with a time of 1:34.43.

The Gophers had two finalists in the 200 individual medley, led by Kate Hardt, who finished second in an NCAA provisional cut time of 2:04.14. Wisconsin's Anna Trinidad won the event with a meet record time of 2:00.67. Minnesota's Abby Ruess finished eighth in a time of 2:10.42.

In the one-meter diving competition, Abbie Bowden took fourth place with 269.30 points while Jessica Livingston was fifth with 267.00 points.

Three Gophers were finalists in the 50 freestyle. Perrott (23.81) and Hasling (24.02) finished second and third respectively, while Coombe was fifth (24.06). In the evening's final event, the 400 medley relay team of Katie Wind, Bridget McCoy, Sarah Solfelt and Perrott finished third in 3:53.07.

The meet continues tomorrow with prelims at 11 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
