Former University of Minnesota men's golfer Tom Lehman will be named 2006 U.S. Ryder Cup captain at a PGA of America press conference Wednesday at Amelia Island, Fla., a source close to the selection process told Golfweek.
Lehman, 45, who will attend the news conference, was selected Monday night on the eve of the PGA of America's 86th annual meeting.
A veteran of three Ryder Cups and a key component five years ago in the U.S. team's stirring Sunday comeback victory in Brookline, Mass., Lehman will be handed the task of turning around a team that has dropped four of the last five Ryder Cup Matches after dominating the event for decades. The 36th Ryder Cup will be staged at The K Club in Ireland Sept. 22-24, 2006.
Lehman, the 1996 British Open champion, played on three U.S. teams from 1995 to '99, compiling a 5-3-2 overall record, including 3-0 in singles. In 1999, when the U.S. trailed Europe 10-6 heading into Sunday's 12 singles matches at The Country Club, the fiery Lehman was sent out first by captain Ben Crenshaw and trounced Lee Westwood, 3 and 2, to begin a 8 1/2 to 3 1/2 rout that long will live in the rich lore of the event.
