GopThe Balcony Club, a booster organization for the University of Minnesota men's hockey team, announced this week that it has made a $40,000 gift to establish an endowed scholarship for the Golden Gopher men's hockey program in the name of former Minnesota head coach Glen Sonmor.
Sonmor, currently the color commentator for Golden Gopher broadcasts on WCCO AM 830 and a scout for the Minnesota Wild, spent five seasons behind the bench for the Maroon and Gold from 1966-71. He was also the head coach of the NHL's Minnesota North Starts from 1979-83.
This gift qualifies for the "President's Scholarship Match" program, meaning the payout of the endowment (5%) is matched dollar-for-dollar.
"This is a wonderful tribute to Glen who has done so much for Gopher Hockey over the years and is beloved by so many of us here at the `U' and throughout the state of Minnesota," Golden Gopher Head Coach Don Lucia said.
