WR: Minnesota Captures First Place at the Southern Scuffle

CornWith the aid of four individual titles, the Golden Gopher wrestling team captured first place at the second annual Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, N.C. Minnesota finished with 169 points, while Cornell placed second with 161.5. The Golden Gophers won four of their six championship matches, while the Big Red managed just two titles out of seven championship matches.

Senior Bobbe Lowe improved to 21-0 with his 3-1 overtime decision at 125 pounds against Joe Kemmerer of UNC-Greensboro. Lowe's 21 straight victories are tied for the 13th-longest streak in school history.

Junior Matt Nagel completed a perfect tournament with his upset in the title match at 165 pounds. Nagel posted a dominating 14-4 major decision against sixth-ranked Nate Yetzer of Edinboro.

Redshirt freshman Roger Kish won his third tournament of the season at 184 pounds. Kish upset eighth-ranked Tyler Baier of Cornell, 7-4, in the title match. The nation's top recruit in 2003, Kish improved to 17-1 on the season.

Second-ranked Cole Konrad survived a two-overtime semifinal match to claim the title at heavyweight. Konrad defeated Michael Faust of Virginia Tech, 5-3, in the semifinals and then earned an 11-4 decision against Tomas Rodriguez of Kent State in the finals.

Redshirt freshman C.P. Schlatter advanced to the finals at 149 pounds in his first action of the season, but he was defeated by second-ranked Dustin Manotti of Cornell in the championship match by the score of 10-2. Fellow freshman Gabriel Dretsch placed second at 174 pounds after dropping an 8-2 decision against Cornell's Joe Mazzurco.

Other placewinners for Minnesota included Matt Koz in third place at 197 pounds, while Mack Reiter and Josh McLay finished in fourth at 125 and 174 pounds, respectively. Andrew Domingues placed fifth at 125 pounds, while Manuel Rivera took sixth at 141 pounds.

The Golden Gophers return to dual meet action next Tuesday when they face Nebraska in Lincoln. The match on Jan. 4 begins at Noon.
