Silkaitis Earns Big Ten Swimmer of the Week Honors

WeekThe Big Ten Conference has announced that junior Gopher swimmer Terry Silkaitis has been named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week for his performance at the Minnesota Challenge over the past weekend. It is the first honor of the season for Silkaitis and the third for the University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving team.

Silkaitis recorded two individual first-place finishes in the 200-yard individual medley and 200-yard freestyle, while helping the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard medley relay to victory. The 2003 Big Ten Swimmer of the Year finished the 200-yard freestyle with a season-best and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:37.62, which ranks fifth nationally. Additionally, the 200-yard freestyle relay team's time of 1:20.25 hit the NCAA provisional time. Silkaitis, who is a sprint and middle freestyle swimmer, won the 200 IM with a time of 1:51.21.

Silkaitis and the Golden Gophers are idle until the Big Ten Championships, Feb. 26-28, hosted by Purdue.
