Minnesota Stuns Iowa 18-15 With Furious Comeback

--> Needing bonus points in the final match of the day, Cole Konrad pinned Iowa's Ryan Fuller with 15 seconds left to give No. 13 Minnesota an 18-15 win over eighth-ranked Iowa this afternoon at Williams Arena. The Golden Gophers won the final three matches to improve to 10-6, 4-3 in the Big Ten. Iowa fell to 11-4, 5-2 in the Big Ten.

Minnesota trailed 15-6 entering the 184-pound match between No. 13 Paul Bradley and unranked Josh McLay. Bradley took a 1-0 lead into the final period on a first period escape but McLay escaped three seconds into the final frame to tie the score. Bradley was charged with a second stall warning with 35 seconds left in the bout and McLay hung on for the 2-1 upset win. It was McLay's first win over a ranked opponent in six attempts this season.

Top-ranked Damion Hahn kept the momentum in Minnesota's favor with a 6-1 decision of No. 13 Ryan Fulsaas at 197 pounds. Hahn racked up three takedowns and over three minutes of riding time. Hahn's win set the stage for the heavyweight bout. Although Minnesota trailed 15-12, the Gophers would lose in a tie situation due to Iowa's major decision to start the meet.

After two scoreless periods, Konrad started down to start the third period and escaped immediately to lead 1-0. He took down Fuller a minute later to lead 3-0. While Fuller attempted to escape, Konrad underhooked Fuller and decked him with 15 seconds left in the match. It marked the second time this season that Konrad has pinned Fuller. Konrad rolled Fuller in 3:58 at the Kaufman-Brand Open, the only other time Fuller has been pinned this year.

The Gophers beat the Hawkeyes for the first time since Feb. 1, 2002 at the Target Center, a span of three matches.

Iowa started ahead as second-ranked Luke Eustice dominated No. 12 Bobbe Lowe at 125 pounds, taking him down four times en route to a 10-2 win. The Gophers got on the board at 133 pounds as Quincy Osborn earned a 4-2 overtime victory over Trent Goodale. With the score knotted at 2-2 and Osborn holding 1:41 in riding time, Goodale rode out the period to take the bout into overtime. Osborn quickly grabbed a leg and took Goodale to the mat just five seconds into the extra frame and closed within 4-3.

Iowa got back on the board with Cliff Moore's 12-6 decision of Tommy Owen at 141 pounds. At 149 pounds, eighth-ranked Ty Eustice took a commanding 8-4 lead into the third period and 58 seconds of advantage time but McAlpine rode out Eustice in the final frame to make the final score 8-5. After refusing to shake hands following the bout, the clearly frustrated Eustice threw his head gear in disgust as he left the mat and was penalized one team point for unsportsmanlike conduct, trimming Iowa's lead to 9-3.

In a pivotal match at 157 pounds, 11th-ranked Joe Johnston defeated 15th-ranked Matt Nagel 7-4 to put the Hawkeyes up 12-3. The Gophers closed the gap with a Jacob Volkmann 4-2 decision over Cole Pape at 165 pounds. Pape took a 2-0 lead with a takedown in the second period, but Volkmann countered with two escapes and a takedown in the third period to win his sixth-straight bout.

At 174 pounds, third-ranked Tyler Nixt scored a close 3-1 decision over No. 12 Jon Duncombe to give Iowa a 15-6 lead. Nixt used a takedown with just three seconds left in the second period to gain the win.

Minnesota finishes the Big Ten portion of its schedule with a dual meet against Penn State on Friday, February 20 at the Sports Pavilion. The meet starts at 7 p.m.
