Minnesota Women's Basketball Defeated at Iowa

Minnesota ended its three-game road stretch with an 81-61 loss at Iowa on Thursday. The Golden Gophers, who fall to 19-5 overall and 8-5 in the Big Ten, were led by Janel McCarville with 12 points and Jamie Broback with 11 points. Iowa moved into a tie for third place in the Big Ten standings with Michigan State at 9-4, 15-9 overall.
Minnesota took its only lead of the game on the first basket of the game, a three-pointer by Kelly Roysland. Iowa's Jamie Cavey scored the next five points, before a McCarville lay-in made it 5-4. Shannon Bolden picked up her second foul, followed 22 seconds later by McCarville's second foul and the pair of Gopher starters headed for the bench.
Iowa took advantage of the situation, going on a 10-0 run with to take a 15-4 lead. Gopher head coach Pam Borton was forced to bring McCarville back, risking a third foul. McCarville ended the five-minute scoring drought with a pair of free throws and scored the Gophers' next eight points. Other than Roysland's trey at the 19:06 mark, it took until Jamie Broback's triple at the 4:37 mark for someone other than McCarville and Roysland to get into the scoring column.
The Gophers faced a 40-22 deficit at halftime. Minnesota committed 13 turnovers in the first 20 minutes of action and finished with 23 for the game.
Minnesota attempted to fight back in the second half. The Gophers shot 50 percent from the field but they couldn't make a dent into the Iowa lead. The closest Minnesota got was 18 points at 79-61 with 1:23 left when Christina Collison hit two free throws. Minnesota hampered any comeback effort by struggling from the free throw line, making just 12-of-19 attempts while the Hawkeyes converted 11 of their 12 charity toss attempts.
Shannon Bolden and Shannon Schonrock, both held scoreless in the first half, scored nine and eight points, respectively, in the second half. McCarville added just one basket after halftime before fouling out with 10:20 left to play.
Iowa finished with three players in double figures, led by Kristi Faulkner with 22.
Minnesota returns home to Williams Arena on Sunday to face Northwestern.
