Softball Wins Twice to Claim Islander Invitational

GoldenThe University of Minnesota softball team (9-7) defeated Prairie View A&M, 5-4, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 1-0 in nine innings, to win the Islander Invitational in Corpus Christi, Texas. The Golden Gophers won the tournament with a 4-1 record and have now won eight of their last 10.

In the first game against Prairie View, Minnesota exploded for five runs in the third inning, including Rachel Keeney's two-run triple, and held on for the one-run victory. Senior Piper Marten earned the save.

Marten started the second game against Corpus Christi and pitched the complete-game, two-hit shutout. She struck out 10 Islanders and earned her seventh complete game in as many starts.

With the game tied at regulation, Minnesota scored the eventual game-winner in the top of the ninth. With a runner on third, freshman Megan Higginbotham hit a sharp grounder to short and Stephanie Sward beat the throw home for the go-ahead run.

Minnesota will next compete at the National Invitational in San Jose, Calif., March 11-16.
