Golden Gopher Soccer Releases Spring and Fall Schedules

WrigThe University of Minnesota women's soccer program has released its spring schedule, along with its tentative 2004 schedule. The new-look Golden Gophers will be led by new head coach Mikki Denney Wright.

Minnesota's spring schedule begins in Dallas, Texas, at the Dallas Sting Tournament, March 27-28. The Golden Gophers will meet Tulane and TCU on Saturday and Baylor on Sunday.

Minnesota will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, for the Drake University Tournament on Saturday, April 3. The Golden Gophers will face Nebraska-Omaha and Drake.

Following a match with the Minnesota Soccer Alumni Team on Sat., April 17 at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium, the Golden Gophers will travel to Ames, Iowa, to meet Iowa and Iowa State on April 24.

Minnesota will begin its 2004 season on Sunday, August 29 against Northern Iowa at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. It will be the first meeting between the two teams.

The Golden Gophers will spend the first three weeks of September on the road. Minnesota will participate in the UAB Tournament in Birmingham, Ala., Sept. 3-5. The Golden Gophers will face Vanderbilt on Friday and 2003 NCAA Tournament participant Central Florida on Sunday. Minnesota will face Boise State and Montana in Boise, Idaho, Sept. 10-11.

The Golden Gophers open their Big Ten slate on the road at Indiana and Purdue, Sept. 17-19. Minnesota will host Michigan and Michigan State, Sept. 24-26, at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium

October begins on the road for Minnesota at Illinois and Northwestern, Oct. 1-3. The Golden Gophers will travel to Wisconsin and Wisconsin-Green Bay the following weekend, Oct. 8-10.

Minnesota will finish the regular season with four of its last five matches at home. The Golden Gophers will host Ohio State and Penn State, Oct. 15-17, at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

Following its Big Ten finale in Iowa on Oct. 22, the Golden Gophers will host non-conference foes North Dakota State on Sunday, Oct. 24 and South Dakota State on Friday, Oct. 29.

In all, Minnesota will face six teams that reached the NCAA Tournament last season. In addition to Central Florida, the Golden Gophers will also face Purdue, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio State and Penn State.

The Golden Gophers lose just two players to graduation and is scheduled to return nearly 77 percent of its goal scoring and total point production from 2003. Minnesota brings back four of their top five scorers, including All-Big Ten Freshman Haley Lentsch. The Golden Gophers also return its entire defensive corps and trio of goalkeepers.
