Rowing Kicks Off Spring Season With A Win Over Louisville

FirstThe University of Minnesota rowing team jump started its spring season with a dual win over Louisville, today in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The Gophers won all three races contested.

Minnesota won the First Varsity Eight race in a time of 7:09. The Golden Gopher team consisted of Katherine Nelson as coxswain, Jackie Gagner, Melissa Roche, Heidi Rose, Vilma Stragyt, Beth Ratterman, Andrea Pierce, Erika Bartkute and Jill Peters at bow.

The Gophers then won the Second Varsity Eight in a time of 7:14, while Louisville finished second in 7:18. The winning boat contained Kristi Branigan, Jenna Buskohl, Sarah Reed, Sam Wangsgard, Lida Storch, Meghan Johnson, Jillian Casey and Cheryl Wick at bow.

In novice action, Minnesota placed first and second. Minnesota's A team of Clara Ballecer, Tracey Tallman, Rachel Hotkowski, Heidi Bechtel, Liz Ponder, Sally Olson, Marh Berit Tomten, Shannon Stanley and Kiira Siitari won the event in a time of 7:01. Minnesota B boat of Melissa Hennessy, Laura Muskatevc, Megan Geraets, Shauna Frank, Julia Herman, Jennifer Sharpe, Margaret Armstrong, Megan Goodman and Angela Reesman finished second with a time of 7:29. Louisville followed with a time of 7:35.

The Golden Gophers continue their spring break trip when they compete against Tennessee, March 20 in Knoxville, Tenn.
