Minnesota senior centerfielder Sam Steidl (Alexandria, Minn.) was named Big Ten Player of the Week for Mar. 9. It marked the second time in his career that Steidl has claimed conference player of the week honors.

Steidl claimed MVP honors for the 2004 Dairy Queen Classic, as he helped lead Minnesota to its first undefeated record in the tournament since 1994. The Golden Gophers defeated West Virginia; No. 14 Nebraska and No. 22 Florida State. He also won the Easton Silver Stick Award, for the highest tournament batting average, as he went 7-for-11 (.636) with four runs, two RBI and two stolen bases.

He saved his best performance for the championship game against No. 22 Florida State on Mar. 7. In that game, Steidl went three-for-four with three runs, two RBI and a stolen base. Steidl broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the second on a single that brought home two runs to make the score 3-1. He stole second and came around to score the fifth run for Minnesota to put them up 5-1 en route to the 6-1 victory over Florida State.

Steidl is currently batting .500 (15-30) with five doubles, five stolen bases and eight runs in the first eight games of the season. He has multiple hit games in seven of the Golden Gophers' eight contests this season.

Minnesota heads out to California for a seven-game road trip this week. The Golden Gophers will start out the trip against Cal State Fullerton on Friday, Mar. 12 at 9 p.m. Minnesota will also play the Titans on Saturday, Mar. 13 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Mar. 14 at 3 p.m. The Golden Gophers will also play a midweek game at Cal State Northridge on Mar. 17 and a three-game series at No. 18 UC Irvine on Mar. 18-20.
